The Classics – Taxi Driver

Two of our features here at The Program are titles “Press Rewind” where we look back at a classic hip hop mc/group, and “The Classics” where we take a look back at a classic movie. For Press Rewind, it will always be a LEGIT classic (at least in our opinion), but for The Classic Movies, we will mix in some questionable selections. Sometimes we will pick a movie that is classic for all the wrong reasons. Like our previous selection which was Meteor Man.

Well today we are selecting a LEGIT selection.  Martin Scrorsese’s classic…

“All the animals come out at night – whores, skunk pus*ies, buggers, queens, fairies, dopers, junkies, sick, venal. Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.”

I think we can all agree that this movie is legit. A great great movie. But here is how great I personally think it is…I have it ranked as my top Scorsese flick (Goodfellas a CLOSE second), and I will even go so far as to say that this movie, Taxi Driver, is my favorite movie EVER. That’s right! I said it. I hate picking favorite movies because it can be like picking a favorite kid, and that’s just not right, but if I had too, this would be the one.

And the aspect of this movie that pushes it over the top for me is the soundtrack. Sure the directing is fantastic, the acting is first rate. Story and dialogue is great. But that haunting soundtrack is what gets me every time. There is one scene in particular that does the trick.  De Niro is writing in his diary, talking like the crazy nut job he is, and it cuts to the busy streets of NY in the seventies. We see the busy crowds walking by the camera. And through the crowds comes Cybill Shepherd. Looking fantastic by the way. She heads into the campaign headquarters, and the soundtrack that goes with this scene….FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC. The whole movie is great, but it’s that one scene that always sticks out for me.

PLUS this movie lead to an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. Seriously! I hope you all are up to date on your American History, but if you never knew how this movie almost killed a President, here you go…

Reagan Assassination attempt

I usually put the movie trailer here…but since I talked about it above, let’s go with a slice of the movie soundtrack. Check it out!
