Press Rewind – Murder was the case

Ready to find out what I think is the best movie soundtrack ever?

Murder Was the Case is a 1994 short film starring Snoop Doggy Dogg. The 18 minute film was directed by Dr. Dre and Fab Five Freddy and chronicles the fictional death of Snoop Dogg and his resurrection after making a deal with the Devil. And it is this 18 minute film that produced in my opinion the best movie soundtrack EVER.

This soundtrack came at the height of the G Funk era, as well as the height of the Death Row era. You might not remember this, but Death Row was HUGE at a certain point in hip hop history. With Dre, Snoop, Warren G, Nate Dogg, Lady of Rage, D.O.C., DJ Quik among many others calling Death Row home at one point over each of there careers, this label owned West Coast hip hop during the early to mid 90’s. And the Murder was the Case soundtrack was the proof.

A great remix of Snoops original “Murder was the case” track. Dre and Ice Cube doing a mini NWA reunion with “Natural Born Killaz”. Dogg Pound putting out one of the groups best tracks in “What would U do”. Nate Dogg having one of his best solo tracks in “One more day”.  Think about that….a great Snoop remix, a mini NWA reunion, and potentially the best tracks ever from Tha Dogg Pound and Nate Dogg. All on one album, all on a movie soundtrack.

But that’s not it. Another great Snoop track with Tray Deee called “21 Jumpstreet”. A great Sam Sneed track in “U better recognize”. One of the best R&B mixed with rap track ever in “Come up to my room” from Jodeci and Dogg Pound. And a great DJ Quik track with “Dollaz + Sense”.

If you want to be refreshed on how good the early 90’s G Funk era was, or if you have never properly been introduced…find this album. It gives you a small taste of a few different artists (some of them legends in the hip hop world), and is also bringing some of the best work made by each of these artists. All of this for a movie that was only 18 minutes long!
